The Municipal Music Band of Almería gave the second concert of its autumn cycle on Sunday, October 25 at the Teatro Apolo. It did so with a programme entitled «Una mirada paralela a la música para banda y orquesta del siglo XIX», with free admission, according to the Área de Cultura, Educación, Museos y Tradiciones del Ayuntamiento.

A journey through Europe

The concert opened with the «Marcia per il Sultano» (1852) by Rossini, which the ensemble added to its repertoire for the first time. Then came Mendelssohn's «Overture for Winds, opus 24», written in 1824 when the composer was fifteen years old. The first part was completed with the overture to «Raymond» (1851), by Ambroise Thomas, inspired by the legend of the Man in the Iron Mask. After the interval, the band performed «Il Giudizio Universale» (1878), a symphonic poem by Camillo de Nardis. The conductor, José Solá Palmer, described the piece as a work «with instrumental colour, dynamic tension and a breadth of timbral resources».

Ballet and opera to close

The ballet fantasy «Coppélia» (1870), by Léo Delibes, brought the concert towards its end. The finale came with the overture to «The Flying Dutchman» (1841), by Richard Wagner, which Solá described as «a genuine musical synthesis of the drama».

Upcoming dates

The cycle continues on Sunday, November 8 with «Una mirada al jazz en paralelo: Andalucía – Estados Unidos», as part of Almerijazz. It will be followed on November 29 by «Una mirada a nuestros solistas (3)» and on December 13 by «Una mirada a nuestros solistas (4)», the last before the special Christmas concert. All will be at 12.00 hours at the Teatro Apolo, with free admission until full capacity is reached.
