The Gallo Pedro Inclusive Short Film Festival celebrates its thirteenth edition with María Valverde as honorary patron. The actress takes over from Isabel Gemio, Javier Fesser, Roberto Pérez Toledo, Leticia Dolera, Álvaro Longoria and Chelo Loureiro. Verdiblanca, the association that organises and coordinates the event, explains that the distinction is due to her debut as a director with «El canto de las manos», a documentary that follows three deaf musicians from Venezuela on their journey to take part in a musical production in sign language directed by Gustavo Dudamel.

Screenings at ALMA, the Apolo and FICAL

The festival keeps its short film competition, screenings, workshops and an exhibition. The City Council provides municipal spaces for the main events: the Espacio ALMA hosts the short film screening on December 1, the Auditorio programmes one of the award-winning shorts at the Municipal Gala for the Day of Disability on December 13 and the Apolo hosts the Closing Gala on December 21. In addition, the award-winning shorts will be broadcast on Interalmería TV and shown on street furniture.

Workshops and a filming laboratory

The Provincial Council, through the area of Culture, Cinema and Almerian Identity and FICAL, takes part in the event. Its vice-president and councillor for Culture, Almudena Morales, has stated that the festival offers a laboratory of inclusive filming in which students from IES Albaida work alongside people with disabilities to make a short film. FICAL gives visibility to these works within its programme.

What you can do

Anyone who wants to take part in the short film competition can submit their work until Tuesday, October 27. To attend the screenings and the galas, you have to keep an eye on the programme of each venue: Espacio ALMA on December 1, Auditorio on December 13 and Apolo on December 21. The councillor for Family, Equality and Inclusion, Paola Laynez, has indicated that the festival is part of the Municipal Disability Plan and that the City Council has promoted it since the first edition. The festival coordinator, Daniel Parra, has highlighted the career of the honorary patron, who began her career with the Almerian filmmaker Manuel Martín Cuenca in «La flaqueza del bolchevique», the film for which she won the Goya for best new actress.
