The first plane from Bucharest (Romania) landed this Tuesday at Almería Airport. With that landing, the first regular connection with the Eastern European country begins and will be maintained all twelve months of the year, according to Turismo de Almería.

Three flights a week

The airline Wizzair operates the route on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with 70,000 seats available throughout the year. The journeys are made in an Airbus A321neo with capacity for 239 passengers and last between three and a half and four hours, depending on the weather during the trip. The launch of this connection is part of the alliance signed by the Diputación Provincial de Almería and the Ayuntamientos de Almería and Roquetas de Mar to open the Almería destination to new markets.

A half-million-euro campaign

That alliance includes a promotional campaign with a budget of 500,000 euros, designed to attract travellers outside the high season. The Diputación contributes 200,000 euros and each of the two ayuntamientos, 150,000. The provincial institution has been responsible for putting the campaign out to tender and awarding it, and a commission with two representatives from each administration oversees its fulfilment. The president of the Diputación, José Antonio García Alcaina, has stated that with this flight "for the first time our land and the Costa de Almería destination are opened to an emerging international market such as Romania". The mayor of Almería, María del Mar Vázquez, has defended promoting the destination "wherever the traveller is deciding". The councillor for Tourism of Roquetas de Mar, Amalia López Yélamos, has indicated that tourism growth must go hand in hand with better connections. The consul general of Romania in Spain, Ion Mihai Stirbu, has stressed the relevance of the flight for his country, since Almería and Roquetas have the largest Romanian community in Andalucía.
