As of this Monday, October 26, the Almería Airport has a direct flight to Bucharest (Romania). It is the first regular connection with that country that will be maintained throughout the twelve months of the year, according to the Diputación de Almería.
The airline Wizzair operates the route with three weekly frequencies, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and offers a total of 70,000 annual seats. The flights are operated with an Airbus A321neo with capacity for 239 passengers, and the journey lasts between three and a half and four hours depending on weather conditions.
Who it affects
The new connection is of interest to the Romanian community settled in the province, which according to the consul general of Romania in Spain, Ion Mihai Stirbu, is the largest and most integrated in Andalusia. It also opens the door to Romanian travelers who want to come to the Almería coast for leisure, climate, family tourism or city breaks.
A half-million-euro campaign
The route is part of the strategic alliance between the Diputación Provincial and the Ayuntamientos de Almería and Roquetas de Mar to promote the destination in new markets. The joint campaign has a budget of 500,000 euros: the Diputación contributes 200,000 and each of the two ayuntamientos, 150,000. The Diputación has processed the tender and a monitoring commission has been created with two representatives from each institution.
The president of the Diputación, José Antonio García Alcaina, has stated that this alliance allows «fighting against seasonality and continuing to boost tourism». The mayor of Almería, María del Mar Vázquez, has indicated that promotion is done where the traveler decides, such as airports and booking platforms. The tourism councillor of Roquetas de Mar, Amalia López Yélamos, has stated that the agreement strengthens tourism as an economic engine of the province.
