What a cemetery is
A cemetery is the place where mortal remains or bodies are laid to rest, according to the definition given by the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Depending on the culture, bodies are placed in coffins or sarcophagi, or wrapped in cloths, to be buried underground or placed in niches, mausoleums, vaults, crypts or other graves. They are also used to keep the ashes of cremated people, in urns or columbaria.
The word comes from the Greek koimeterion, meaning "dormitory": according to Christian belief, bodies "slept" until the day of resurrection. Catholic cemeteries are also called camposantos.
