The Guardia Civil has arrested three people in Almería for their alleged participation in the shooting murder of Belgian police officer Nordine el Talbi, 41, which occurred in the town of Jette (Brussels) in the early hours of October 12 to 13. The officer died in the line of duty.

An operation near the port

The detainees were in the province and were subject to several European Arrest Warrants (EAW) issued at the request of the Belgian Federal Police, which arrived through the Guardia Civil liaison officer in Belgium. Suspecting that they might flee by sea to Morocco, the armed institute set up an operation near the port of Almería and exchanged information with the Belgian police in real time. After several hours of operation, the three were arrested before boarding, although they physically resisted.

Search of a home

The action did not end with the arrests. Spanish and Belgian judicial authorities processed a European Investigation Order (EIO) to enter a home located during the operation and look for evidence to help clarify the facts and provide evidence to the judicial process. The arrested were brought before the Central Investigating Court of the Audiencia Nacional on the morning of October 19.

Impact in Belgium

According to the Guardia Civil, the operation was possible thanks to international police and judicial cooperation, with direct, real-time contact throughout the process. The case has had wide impact in Belgium: the prosecutor in the case and the head of the Brussels Federal Police held a press conference on October 18 in which they stressed the speed of the information exchange and the result of the operation.
