Amigos de la Alcazaba closed its cultural visit to Orce, in the province of Granada, this weekend with a tour of the Museo de Prehistoria Josep Gibert, the historic centre, the Alcazaba de las Siete Torres and the Fuencaliente spring. The association highlights that the municipality is home to one of the key sites for understanding European prehistory: the Hombre de Orce is the oldest hominid in Europe, at almost 1,400,000 years old.

Railway heritage, the next stop

The October programme continues on Saturday, October 24 with the event «El patrimonio ferroviario almeriense», within the programme «Las Huellas de nuestra historia». The historian Pedro Mena and Antonio Aguilera, secretary of the Asociación de Amigos del Ferrocarril de Almería (ASAFAL), will accompany the group on a tour of the Station, the mineral loading dock and the ASAFAL Museum. On Friday, October 30 the association proposes the visit «Los Millares al Descubierto. Últimos descubrimientos», within the provincial programme Senderos de Historia, with Martín Haro Navarro, coordinator of the Enclave Arqueológico de Los Millares. The following day, Saturday, October 31, the appointment is musical: a San Juan de la Cruz concert at the Abadía del Sacromonte in Granada, in collaboration with the Asociación de la Abadía del Sacromonte.

What was seen in Orce

As the association explains, the visit began at the Museum of Prehistory, where participants learned about the finds from Venta Micena, Barranco León and Fuente Nueva, with stone tools, fossil remains and reproductions such as the skull of the Hombre de Orce and the tooth of the Niño de Orce. The tour continued through the Iglesia de Santa María de la Anunciación, with its 1769 baroque organ, the Palacio de los Segura —known as the «Casa de los Duendes»— and the Alcazaba de las Siete Torres, declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico. The day included a meal with cordero segureño at the restaurant «El Rincón del Salero» and a walk to the Fuencaliente spring, whose waters emerge at about 19 degrees. The group ended the day at the Cerro de la Virgen de la Cabeza, with remains from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age.

Anyone who wants to join the upcoming activities can find out more through Amigos de la Alcazaba. The association has not detailed in its announcement the price, capacity or registration method for these events.
