The University of Almería (UAL) has held the 2nd Awareness Conference on addictions and lifestyle habits, under the slogan "Neither smoke nor vapor: what really happens to your body". The meeting, with free admission and aimed at both the university community and the general public, took place in the Conference Room of the Health Sciences Building for an hour and a half, in an interview-discussion format that allowed dialogue with the attending public.
Sexual health, nutrition and psychology
The speakers analyzed the consequences of tobacco and vaping from various health areas. Gynecologist Silvia Tapiador Alberos, from Clínica Alborán CMM and Hospital Materno-Infantil Princesa Leonor (Torrecárdenas), detailed how tobacco affects sexual and reproductive health. As she explained, "it affects all levels of health, both at the sexual and reproductive level", and she mentioned erectile dysfunction in men, the chances of pregnancy in young girls and the role of tobacco in the human papillomavirus (HPV).
UAL professor Montserrat Monserrat Hernández addressed the nutrients that are altered by consumption, such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, B-group vitamins, vitamin D and iron, and offered dietary guidelines for those who want to quit smoking or vaping and to manage anxiety.
General health psychologist Isabel Craviotto Manrique, technical advisor of the Comprehensive Tobacco Plan of Andalusia (PITA), warned that vaping devices are "a new wrapper for the same addiction strategy" and encouraged identifying the marketing tools of the tobacco industry, which she said is now focused on the young population.
A second edition
The director of the Healthy Campus Secretariat, Lorena Gutiérrez, stressed that the goal is to raise awareness of the impact of tobacco consumption on health and also address the psychological component, such as fears of quitting smoking and techniques to achieve it. The speakers were received by the UAL Vice-Rector for Health and Sports, Gabriel Aguilera.
The activity is part of the Health Promotion Unit (UPS), dependent on the Directorate of Healthy Campus of the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability, Health and Sports.
