The mayor of Níjar, José Francisco Garrido, has visited greenhouses and agricultural companies in the municipality accompanied by the Services councillor, Juan Carlos Agenjo. The purpose of the visit, according to the Ayuntamiento, was to convey the Council's support to the sector and to gather its main demands.

The weight of farming in the municipality

Garrido has stated that agriculture moves around 800 million euros in Níjar and has described it as "the main economic and social driver" of the municipality. The mayor also stressed the pride that, in his view, comes from having farmers and companies that have made Níjar "the municipality in all of Europe with the highest percentage of organic crops".

A municipality of 33,319 inhabitants and 38 settlements

Níjar is the largest municipality in the province of Almería and brings together, in addition to the municipal capital, another 37 localities, including Campohermoso, San Isidro de Níjar and San José. According to 2025 INE data, it has 33,319 inhabitants, of whom 2,313 correspond to the Níjar capital settlement. Much of its territory is occupied by the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, recognised as a Geopark by Unesco in 1999.

Municipal activity in recent weeks

The visit comes after the Ayuntamiento has addressed other significant matters for the municipality in recent days. The portal reported on October 19, 2026 that the mayor and the Urbanism councillor, Manuel Herrero, met with Endesa to discuss the power cuts that recur every summer, especially on the coast, and that the company detailed actions on several lines. Also on October 4, 2026, the Ayuntamiento announced the completion of the improvement works on the rural roads of El Rodón and El Motorcillo, in Pueblo Blanco, with an investment of nearly 200,000 euros and work on about 1.7 kilometres of roads used daily by residents and agricultural professionals.
